Chime / Renew is an interactive glass-and-metalwork sculpture commissioned for the Rose Event Commons by the Dunin-Deshpande Queen's Innovation Centre (DDQIC) at Queen’s University. Based on the DDQIC logo, the sculpture is a deconstructed stained-glass window reminiscent of the emblematic window at Douglas Library. Playing on the lineage of stained-glass windows as a means of storytelling and documenting history, this work symbolizes the history being made at the DDQIC and across Queen’s today. The interactive aspect of this work shifts the relationship between the sculpture and the viewer in an effort to de-hierarchize it. Whereas the Western colonial application of stained-glass windows permits only passive observation, this work equates the artwork and the audience on the same level – the sculpture invites the viewer’s own creativity and authorship into the work. The audience may engage with the suspended glass to manipulate the colourful light projection on the ground, also producing a symphony of joyful chimes. The sculpture is made with recycled steel scraps generously donated by KIMCO, as well as recycled glass sourced on campus and through the Kingston Glass House. These materials symbolize the need to include sustainability within innovation. Repurposing “what we have'' challenges us to develop a new understanding of materials and concepts. It is an act of renewing. The work is now in the permanent collection of the DDQIC, and can be viewed and played in the Rose Event Commons in Mitchell Hall.
